French bicycle identification connects the marked bicycle with its owner through an approved identification system. It is different from the factory frame number and from motor vehicle registration. Knowing which record you have prevents problems when collecting the bike, changing ownership or reporting theft.

Separate three different records

Record What it identifies What it does not establish
Factory frame number The physical frame within the manufacturer system That French owner registration has been completed
French bicycle identification mark The bicycle in the approved identification system linked to FNUCI That motor assistance or road equipment is compliant
Motor vehicle registration Vehicles subject to that separate registration system Ordinary bicycle identification or suitability for every cycle route

What professional bicycle sales involve

The French transport ministry states that identification requirements cover new bicycles sold by professionals from January 2021 and used bicycles from July 2021. The framework also covers online professional sales. Approved operators connect marking and owner information with the national file.

For your order, obtain the practical arrangement in writing. ARSK has not established an order specific identification handover in this guide. That is an unresolved delivery detail, not proof that identification is unnecessary or that it is already included.

Ask these questions before completing the order

  1. Which approved operator will handle marking and owner registration?
  2. Where will the mark be applied, and when will the registration be completed?
  3. Which owner details are needed and how will they be submitted securely?
  4. Is any identification charge included in the order total?
  5. Which registration record, owner access instructions and certificate route will be provided?
  6. Who corrects errors or incomplete ownership details after delivery?

If local completion is proposed, request the provider, appointment process and responsibilities before relying on that arrangement. Do not assume that finding your own workshop later removes the seller's applicable duties.

At delivery, match the physical bike to its records

  • Photograph the full bike, factory frame number and identification mark.
  • Compare model, colour and recorded identifiers with your invoice and registration record.
  • Confirm that your ownership details are correct through the operator's secure process.
  • Save the invoice, owner access instructions and any certificate offline.

Report discrepancies promptly with the order number and photographs of the relevant identifiers. Do not post personal details or complete ownership documents in public reviews. Keep copies for police, insurers and the identification operator where needed.

After resale or theft

For resale, follow the operator's ownership transfer procedure and give the buyer the proper transfer records. Simply handing over the keys and old invoice may leave the file out of date.

After theft, report the incident to police and follow the operator's procedure for recording the stolen status. Notify your insurer if covered. Identification helps connect recovered bikes with owners; it does not prevent theft or guarantee recovery.
