Hub and mid drive describe where assistance enters the bike's drive system. Neither layout wins every journey. Compare the actual motor, gearing, bike weight, controls and service support with your route. Wattage alone cannot tell you how easily the bike will climb, how natural it feels or how far it will travel.
Understand the physical difference
Hub motors sit inside wheel hubs. Mid drive motors sit near the crank and provide assistance through the bicycle drivetrain. XT90, GT300, GT900 and SU7 list rear hub motors. They should be compared as complete rear hub bikes, rather than assuming another brand's drive system behavior applies to them.
| Buying task | Hub layout | Mid drive layout |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the motor act? | At the wheel hub | Through the crank and bicycle drivetrain |
| What do bicycle gears change? | The rider's pedaling ratio; they do not reroute hub motor output through the chain | The drivetrain ratio used by rider and motor output |
| What to inspect for puncture service? | Wheel removal instructions, motor cable and axle arrangement | Wheel and gear system instructions for that bike |
| What to ask about climbing? | Complete load, motor details, controls and route suitability | The same, plus suitable gear use for the drive system |
| What determines support? | Actual sensors, controller and settings | Actual sensors, controller and settings |
Choose around your route
For ordinary trips with convenient charging, first compare fit, battery access, complete cost and local repair options. Motor location may not be the biggest constraint. If your storage requires daily carrying, poor handling fit can outweigh your motor preference immediately.
For repeated long climbs or heavy loads, ask for evidence relevant to that route and load. Mid drive systems can use the bicycle's gearing, but that fact does not guarantee climbing ability. Rear hub bikes still benefit from appropriate rider gearing. The steepness, length and stop patterns of the climb matter.
Check what service will involve
Ask the repair provider which systems they actually handle. Rear wheel work on rear hub bikes may involve motor wiring and axle hardware. Mid drive service depends on the exact motor and supported diagnostic tools. Neither layout means every nearby bicycle shop can repair the electrical system.
Chains, brakes and tires also need ordinary maintenance. Compare access to the correct parts, battery replacement process and responsibility for diagnostics. Do not accept an unspecified promise of easy servicing in place of an actual service route.
Questions for your test ride
- Can you start, stop and turn comfortably with the assistance controls?
- Does the lowest available gear allow comfortable pedaling on the intended route?
- How does assistance respond when you change effort or stop pedaling?
- Can the bike be moved and stored where it must live?
- Who can handle the motor system, and what information will they need?
Verified ARSK torque and comparative efficiency results are not available here. Published torque, sensor features or range for another drive system should not be transferred to these models. Use our hills and gearing guide to shortlist bikes for your route, then compare complete bikes.
